all aboard!

Our weekend train ride was quite lovely!

Although it was double the time it would take us to drive, thankfully, we were able to walk around the train cars.

The coach seats were much roomier than I expected (unlike domestic flights). Much roomier, in fact, Eric could extend his legs to a pretty comfortable distance. Unfortunately, the distance wasn't enough to guard my poor nose from the non-deodorant wearing man who also smelled of smoke. My sense of smell is pretty strong; I promptly stuck my nose into a bag of cookies.

Thankfully, we escaped into the lounge car for the rest of the ride. We munched on the homemade cookies and sandwiches we brought, read, and played games. Much more relaxing when you weren't concentrating on breathing!

Later that evening, we even had dinner in the dining car, and watched the scenery with a nice, soon-to-be retired couple. Surprisingly, train food isn't too bad! I ordered a bbq sandwich which was easy to eat without feeling outrageously full.

The train ride back from Dallas was even nicer.

The train was larger and even had an observatory lounge with tall windows extending to part of the ceiling.

We never even sat in our regular seat; the observatory was much more scenic, relaxing, and fun.

I'd say trains have my approval! We each paid $48 round trip- not bad, huh? Granted, the trip is much longer, but if you've got time to spare, favor mass transit, and would rather see a bit of non-highway, trains are a fantastic alternative. And dare I say it's a bit romantic reading and watching the scenery go by?

Wouldn't it be nice to take a long train ride? I'd love to see the scenery transform and watch hills become mountains.
