i thought you forgot.

So today has been a long day of dialogue editing, which is both a little frustrating and really rewarding. We recorded all character dialogue separately, and I really believe that dialogue editing is really a form of art. Here you are with a script of dialogue between characters, and somehow you need to work a little magic and blend them together. Pitches, volumes, pauses, all need to be put together to help build a soundscape as realistic as possible. And it's weird to see how the recording that you thought sounded wonderful, actually doesn't blend well with the delivery of the previous character.

So here I am sewing together words and phrases, trying to make them sound natural. And while it's not perfect, I still find it fascinating. Switching a line with a different take may completely change the feel of the moment. Taking out one word may help fluidity. Changing the pitch in their voice (within reason) may help sew together patches. It's crazy, and I feel incredibly nerdy. . . but excited.

It's a tedious process though. 12 seconds of dialogue may have you listening to the same line 20+ times until you get the right placement. Today, my 3 minute scene took me nearly 5 hours to piece together (and that's still only leaving it as a mono file). But surprisingly, the time flies by quickly. I think that's a good sign.

This week marks almost a month from my second interview at the game company I was trying to get an internship. I was told that they would get back to me after the weekend (my second interview was on a Friday), but I felt like they forgot. I sent a couple e-mails afterwards following up my interviews, and they had previously been very prompt to reply. After a few weeks of anticipation, I figured it was okay. In all honesty, I was glad that I had at least had experienced an interview process for a game company, and now had new found knowledge about the skills they look for. And of course, there's that demo reel I have now. Yesterday, I decided that I wouldn't wait for them any longer and started looking up companies that I would possibly try and find a job at. What a bad time to be graduating!

To my surprise, I received an e-mail today from the HR of the game company, asking for me to call back when I could. Well. . . I called 10 minutes after the e-mail had been sent! :) But alas! No answer. . . and I ended up leaving a message. I figure, the news can be either good or bad. Good if I land an internship, and well, acceptable (not necessarily bad) if they are just letting me know that I'm not quite what they are looking for. I'd much rather have closure than wonder what the heck is going on. :). So yes, once again I'm finding myself a little giddy with anticipation. Any news would be good.

Anyways, tomorrow is our alpha (pretty much our first working run-through) for my game class. I'm really hoping it goes well, especially on my end. I know I've put in a lot of work, but I'm not quite sure if that'll show. I'm also anxious because I know that my previous sound design professor will be showing up and we don't quite have things in stereo yet and there's quite a bit of sound missing. Soooo. . . I suppose we'll just have to see. >_<

Hopefully, tomorrow will be lovely. :)
